we're in it for the long haul. . .

the doctor said between 5-51/2 months to introduce "the spoon". today she's 5 months old! (she's nippin' at your heels carrie). we thought we'd try out some rice cereal tonight. funny thing is she was more interested in "the spoon" and the bowl (btw: thanks valerie!!) than the food. it was so fun to watch her facial expressions as she tasted it. it went better than expected though.
here she is looking at "the spoon". very intent.
after eating we had some play time. any funny stories, or more importantly, advice for me as we start this new step? remember she's been all breast milk until today.

Hooray for Jillian!

Give Jill her own spoon. It will help keep her attention away from the feeding spoon. I started Sam on solids at four months. He was always more interested in the food than the spoon. He did go through a phase where he didn't want to eat anything but I just kept trying and eventually he decided food was good again. If she doesn't seem interested keep trying. There is a 3 month window when it's best to introduce solids, 4-6 months. I always made half the bowl cereal and the other half fruit or veggie. I'd wait until she's used to thicker textures though. You can even mix the cereal straight into applesauce or whatever too, when she's eating more.

Yay Jillian! Solids are so much fun!

I too like giving the baby a spoon, if she's interested in it more than the food. I'm sure your doctor said to introduce the veggies first (I think all of our doctors have suggested this). I've done this usuallty and then moved onto fruits. Now we just do a veggie and then I follow it up with fruit, all in the same sitting (like half a container of each, along with some rice cereal).

I mix the fruit or veggie too, but usually only if they dont' eat the rice cereal without mixing it, or if I want the fruit to be a thicker consistency. We're approaching this stage with Carrie...she gets mad sometimes when she gets a bite of cereal. Those fruits and veggies are just so much more interesting.

Oh, and one last thing! This time around I'm mixing the cereal with some formula, to try and get Caroline to like the flavor. She has rejected every bottle of formula she's ever tried. So, I'm hoping she'll acquire the taste for formula this way. We'll see...

Hopefully Jillian likes food more then Olivia! She's not much of an eater- so we don't give her much, but we need to now that she's 7 months! Olivia really likes banannas- maybe Jill would like that better too! It's fun, but messy and sticky! Liv likes to hold her own spoon too, it does help!

Go for it! Try a veggie or a fruit. I'm not really sure how true it is that if you give them fruit first they won't eat veggies. You can decide for yourself. I didn't mix the cereal flakes straight into the fruit until Sam was eating oatmeal. But I always fed him fruit/veggie with(on the side but in the same bowl) the cereal.

It's funny because you'd think that a baby would prefer fruit over veggie. Not Sam. He gagged on applesauce and pears but ate green beans and peas just fine. Now he's the opposite: fruit good, veggies bad.

Yes, Sarah P. you should be feeding Olivia solids!!! The more you give them to her the more she will eat. Make sure you do it regularly, i.e. breakfast, lunch, dinner. She could be eating Cheerios or Fruit Puffs almost by now! Sam was just starting little snacks at 7 months. Imagine the fun!!!

FYI: It can take a child up to 12 introductions with a single food to decide if they like it or not. You can't say they don't like it if they spit it out the first or even the third time. And give them a food, even if you don't like it. My sister never fed her girls anything she wouldn't eat(which is about everything). Now they won't even try things that are new to them.

Sorry this is so long. I just have all this food stuff in my head and NEVER get to use it!

Wow, what good advice from everyone. I will never forget when I helped my mom feed my little sisters....Bananas....mMmmMm...One for you and two for me....one for you and two for me. When they were through my mom was always surprised at how much they ate!

Wow!--Look at all the advice--parents advice is always the best--but you need to remember to take into account your own babies needs and speed at which she does these things.Aren't these blogs great???In my day, they introduced the rice cereal mixed with a little fruit first for a couple of weeks or so-- but they are always changing things.

Alisha, My only suggestion is to wait to add anything until she gets used to the rice cereal first. Jessalyn never had a problem eating, but I have had other friends and relatives who have had issues if they started adding stuff to the cereal too soon. I would give it a couple weeks. I love you and good luck. Its so fun to watch them figure things out. I love you.

I thought this website had a lot of good information and it said that bananas are a good first solid food.

Also, when our kids were young someone showed me that bananas are easily sectioned into three little pieces. When you take a small slice (round circle) of (not overripe) banana and press on it in the center it will break into three equal pieces. It was great when the kids started doing the finger food thing. Good luck!

oh, i love this picture, alisha! you look so pretty and jillian is such a doll. I kinda get grossed out feeding nora when she gets it all over the dang place, but hey, i guess i better get over it. diapers are no big deal, but nasty banana all up her nose and all over my shirt? no thanks! we love ya and good luck. p.s. nora likes her seat, but we really only use it for meal time. it's really easy to wipe down, so that's good!
